an east side guide to coffee

January 15, 2020

You already know what this is. This is a roundup of the coffee shops that are within a 5 mile vicinity of me, but...they're really good and I think they're worth highlighting. If you frequent the Hollywood/Silver Lake neighborhood, or even just visiting LA for a weekend, I recommend checking these out. Here's the list:

ROO COFFEE

The Yelp description of Roo literally reads: "A sunny, hip spot for Australian coffee & casual breakfast in Silver Lake" and this pretty much sums it up. Roo is a coffee spot with loads of fun LA food items (i.e. every kind of toast you can think of), alongside coffee, matcha, and all the good stuff. I love the bistro style seating on the patio, and if you go on a Saturday, you can also walk through the Silverlake Farmer's Market/Flea Market nearby. P.S. Definitely order the mushroom toast.

DAYGLOW

Dayglow is a coffee shop purely built for Instagram but I love it nonetheless. The interior is pure, Glossier pink, and they have a lot of unique menu items like "Moonrise Kingdom" and "Fantastic Mr. Fox" (aka fun, mixed coffee drinks). A great spot to catch up with friends, specifically, as opposed to going there with your laptop to do work. The tiny tables were clearly not designed for Macbook loitering.

Silver Lake

COFFEE COMMISSARY

Coffee Commissary is a sweet little hole-in-the-wall in Hollywood that you'd probably miss driving down Sunset Blvd. Lots of pastries, great coffee, and free wifi. The holy trinity of café necessities. Also, the iced oat vanilla latte is 10/10, and there's a Sweetgreen down the block. Everybody wins!

GO GET EM TIGER

If you're an East LA human, you've definitely been to Larchmont Village. Larchmont is constantly buzzing on the weekends, and Go Get Em Tiger is probably one of the most popular destinations on the street. They have a great selection of brunch items if you're planning to stay, or you could grab any number of coffee drinks and head to the nearest CBD shop down the street for some sunny, LA window shopping.

Los Angeles, CA 90004

INTELLIGENTSIA

If you ever run into me in LA, it's more than likely at Intelligentsia. I'm not sure what my attraction to this coffee shop is, minus the close proximity to my house, but I'm a sucker for hipster-y coffee shops with outdoor seating. I love their coffee + espresso, and their matcha is pretty great too. The staff is sweet and they also make "cornflake cookies", which I definitely recommend trying at least once. It's located directly on Sunset Junction, so there are loads of places to walk to and explore around the area. (If you are in what I think is my reader demographic, you'd probably enjoy the Aesop store or Le Labo nearby.)

Find it IRL:

3922 W Sunset Blvd

Los Angeles, CA 90029

Silver Lake

LA COLOMBE

Oat. Draft. Latte. That's it. This is the only thing I'm writing about La Colombe.

Find it IRL:

2828 Newell St, Ste 4

Los Angeles, CA 90039

Silver Lake

Happy exploring!
